Add a parcel

Zoom to the field, keep the looked-up outline, or draw the line yourself.

A vine row and the grass path that marks the edge of one parcel.

A parcel is one outline on the map, with a fiche behind it. You add it from the parcel map, after sign-in. The map is at https://app.millesime.io. The English pages are at https://app.millesime.io/en. A visit with no session is sent back to sign-in.

This note covers that first outline: what Add does, how to keep a looked-up line, when to trim or merge, and when the line has to be drawn by hand.

Start from the map

On the map, press Add.

Zoom until you can see the field. Then click the field itself. The click is the place the app uses to look up an outline. A click on the surrounding map, before you have zoomed in, is a poor place to start: the block under the pointer is hard to see, and the lookup follows that point.

When the service finds a block, the outline appears on the map. It is closed. A closed outline is a loop. That loop is what a later 3D walk follows. Save uses this outline.

You do not have to trace a known field by hand when the lookup has already returned a line. Edit that line.

Move the looked-up line

Drag a corner to move it. Click the boundary to add a point. The line stays closed while you do this. Use a new point when a corner is not enough: a hedge that cuts in, a row that steps out, a corner the lookup rounded off.

Keep the line on the ground that belongs to this parcel. The center of the stored line becomes the location of the parcel. The map centers there when you open the fiche later. A line that wanders into the next block will center in the wrong place, and the walk will treat that ground as part of this parcel.

Trim

Trim cuts a piece off. The screen asks you to click the two corners of the piece to cut off. Use it when the looked-up block includes ground that is not this parcel.

Typical cases:

  • A path or a headland along the edge
  • A neighbor's row that the lookup joined to yours
  • A shed, a yard, or a strip of trees inside the block

Trim does not open the line. The outline stays closed. If the piece you wanted to remove is still there, trim again, or drag the corners until the line sits on the real edge.

Merge

Merge adds a neighboring block that touches the outline. Use it when one parcel is two adjoining blocks in the lookup, and you want a single fiche for both.

Click another block to add it, or click the boundary to add a point. The new piece has to touch the line you already have. If it does not, the screen says these blocks do not touch. If you click a block that is already inside the line, the screen says that block is already in the outline. A failed merge leaves the line as it was.

A block across a road, with a gap, is not a merge. Draw or look up that block on its own if it is a separate parcel.

After a merge, walk the boundary once with your eyes before you save. The joined line is still one closed outline. The walk, later, treats the whole of it as this parcel.

Save the outline

Save uses the line on the map. It does not ask you to draw it again. The next step is the name.

If you leave Add without saving, the draft is not a parcel. Nothing is added to the list, and no fiche exists yet.

When the lookup has nothing

If there is no field at that point, or the service does not answer, press Draw it yourself.

Click the map to place each point. Undo removes the last point. Finish moves on to the name. You need at least two points.

A line drawn by hand is not a closed outline. It can still be saved, named, and opened as a fiche. The 3D walk follows a closed outline. Without one, that screen says so and does not start the walk. Draw it yourself is the fallback for a line the lookup cannot return. It is not a second way to get a closed block. If a closed line did appear, edit that line instead of drawing a new one.

Two points are enough to store the line. They are not enough for a walk. If you expect to map the parcel in 3D, go back to a looked-up outline when the service can provide one.

The name

The name is 80 characters at most. Save parcel stores the parcel on this account.

If a crop was detected with the outline, that crop is saved with the parcel. You can change it later on the fiche. The fiche does not invent a crop when none was detected. You choose one from the menu, or you leave it until you know.

The fiche opens next. The name you just typed is the name in the list and the name on the map.

On a computer, the pointer on a parcel shows that name along the north edge, on a light plate. A phone does not show the plate. The name is still on the fiche and in the list.

Open it again

Click a parcel in the list. The fiche opens under that row. Click the same parcel again to close the fiche. The map centers on the parcel.

Click the middle of the parcel on the map to open it. Click the middle again to close it. The click does not have to land on the outline. A click on the stroke is not required.

The map and the menu stay the height of the window. Only the list scrolls. Drag the edge between the list and the map to change the width. Double-click that edge to put the width back.

A click in the list puts the top of the opened fiche at the top of the list, including the last parcels. You do not scroll inside the list to find the fields of a parcel that sits at the bottom.

Change the outline later

On the fiche, the Outline button, with the other actions, is Edit outline. While you edit, the stroke is orange, so the draft is distinct from the stored line.

The same controls apply to a looked-up outline: drag a corner, click the boundary to add a point, trim, merge. Saving a change asks first. Until you confirm, the stored line stays as it was. Cancel leaves that stored line alone.

The pencil on another line of the fiche edits that line. It does not open the outline. Use Outline when the change is the shape on the map.

The trash can asks before it deletes the parcel. The question is Delete this parcel? Confirming removes the parcel and its photos from this account. A farm that contained it keeps its own name. The farm is a separate record. Create the farm from Manage, not from this outline.

What the screen says

While you zoom, the map asks you to zoom in until you can see the field. After the click, it says it is looking up the outline. When the line is ready, it tells you to drag a corner or click the boundary.

If there is no field at that point, it says so and tells you to draw the outline yourself. If the outline service did not answer, it says that too, with the same instruction. Those two sentences are the moment for Draw it yourself.

While you draw, zoom in to add a point. The help line is: click the map to add a point, then undo, cancel, or finish the line. Finish moves on to the name once there are at least two points. With fewer points, Finish does nothing. The name is refused when it is longer than 80 characters. The screen says to use a parcel name of 80 characters or fewer.

If a crop was detected, the screen names it before you save. You can still change that crop on the fiche.

Photos, the variety, the campaign year, and the cycle dates are edited on the fiche after the parcel exists. They are not part of Add.
